Why did you choose that particular degree course?
The qualification enables me to teach students from an older demographic.
Tell us about your employer
I don't have one employer - as a Freelancer/Self-employed, I work for a number a number of different organisations including BBC Sport, ITV Sport, Sky Sports and Premier League Productions. Their customer base is sports fans, but across a wide spectrum of interest and knowledge.
What was the position you were recruited for. Please briefly outline the position you were recruited to within your organisation and summarise the business needs and role you fulfil
I primarily work as a Football Commentator, but also present and report across a number of other sports too, as well as hosting Award Ceremonies and Panel discussions. For all of these roles I need to be throughly prepared and well researched, able to broadcast under pressure, and maintain good working relationships with my colleagues and those I interview/speak to.
What attracted you to this position?
Simply I've always loved sport.
What are the key skills you learnt at Warwick that have helped you with your career to date?
Throughout my academic career I've honed my abilities to effectively manage time and a variety of commitments. Now as a freelancer, husband, and father of two, I daily rely on these abilities to stay on top of my busy schedule.
What has been your greatest career challenge to date and how did your experience and skills help overcome it?
Taking the decision to leave full-time employment and become self-employed. It wasn't a choice made lightly. I sought advice from those who had made similar transitions and learnt from their stories. I also met with a number of potential employers, many of whom I had previously worked with, to discuss future work prospects. Key to my success here was the ability to maintain positive relationships with those I've worked alongside throughout my career.
What top tips would you give to students looking for a career in your market sector?
Work on your resilience. What ever industry you venture into there will be challenges, set backs and disappointments. Rather than fear this, know it's is part of the journey. Treat each experience as a chance to learn and improve, even when you don't get the desired outcome.
What do you know now that you wish you had known when you were applying for jobs?
Consider the needs of the employer, and how it is you can help them achieve their objectives and goals. Too many times, myself included, the focus is on selling yourself and what you're good at. The key is detailing how your strengths can help everybody succeed.
Any additional advice or comments?
Always protect your mental health. At times the journey towards your ambitions may become too much. Where ever you can look to take time away from the stress and strain, recharge, and come back even stronger, but only if you believe the end goal is still worthy of the sacrifices. There are always other options when it comes to fulfilment.
