Terms of Reference

(a) To promote, develop and monitor policies for the delivery and enhancement of learning and teaching within the University in co-ordination with relevant University committees, departments and centres.

(b) To develop and monitor policies for the enhancement of quality and standards in learning and teaching in co-ordination with relevant University committees, departments and centres.

(c) To exercise, on behalf of the Senate, responsibility for the development and oversight of the implementation of the University’s Learning and Teaching Strategy, to include quality assurance and enhancement, curriculum development and maintenance of standards for all taught, research and other degrees and courses, across all four Faculties and in respect of partnership and distance learning provision.

(d) To develop and implement policy in relation to external quality assurance operations including consideration of reports by the Quality Assurance Agency, OFSTED and Professional and Statutory Bodies.

(e) To consider reports from the Board of Undergraduate Studies, the Board of Graduate Studies and the Collaborative, Flexible and Distributed Learning Sub-Committee on the detailed implementation of policies for quality assurance and enhancement and maintenance of standards and in particular to consider:

  • Issues of concern arising from annual summary reports on issues identified in external examiners' reports
  • Arrangements for and issues of concern arising from reports of periodic reviews of degree courses
  • Issues of concern arising from Student-Staff Liaison Committees
  • The operation of the Student Academic Complaints Procedure.

(f) To advise the Senate, in the light of reports and recommendations of the Boards of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies, in respect of examinations policies and arrangements for all taught, research and other degrees and courses.

(g) To report to the Senate, as appropriate, on the operation of responsibilities in these areas.

Reporting Structure

The Academic Quality and Standards Committee reports to the Senate.

The Committee receives reports from the Board of Undergraduate Studies, the Board of Graduate Studies, the Collaborative, Flexible and Distributed Learning Sub-Committee and the E-Learning Steering Group regarding the detailed implementation of policies for quality assurance and enhancement and maintenance of standards (as outlined above in (c)) and from the Boards of the Faculties of Arts, Medicine, Science and social sciences regarding the implementation of the University strategy for quality assurance and enhancement and maintenance of standards for all taught, research and other degrees and courses.
