Emergency Planning & Business Continuity

The University is currently updating and enhancing its Emergency Planning Procedures for managing the immediate impact of any major disaster or emergency at institutional level.

What is Emergency Planning?

Emergency Planning is concerned with the first stage in the University’s response to a major incident. It includes management of the initial impact whilst also seeking to reduce, control or mitigate potential harm to University members or damage to the University’s campus and buildings.

The University's Emergency Planning Policy sets out the structure for managing emergencies and roles and responsibilities of key central teams. The Emergency Plan provides the framework for managing the University response.

What is Business Continuity?

Business Continuity is the process of assessing potential risks and developing strategies and procedures for dealing with them, so that the University’s core activities and functions can recover as soon as an emergency is under control.

The University and Business Continuity Planning

The University is committed to Business Continuity Planning as part of its on-going emergency planning processes and is a member of HEBCON (Higher Education Business Continuity Network).

Business Continuity Plans are an essential element of the University’s Governance and Emergency Planning at all levels (University, department, activity) and departments are required to formulate their own Business Continuity Plans to identify how their critical functions could be recovered swiftly following any emergency.

In formulating their plans, departments should consider which other academic departments or central services they would depend on in order to regain full functionality. This could include departments with which they share teaching or key research partnerships, or central services such as ITS or Estates.

The Operational Risk Management Group (ORMG)

The Operational Risk Management Group takes an overview of risk assessment and related processes at a departmental and operational level and reports any significant changes to risks and any issues arising with regard to business continuity planning, to the Steering Committee.

Further Information and Guidance

Working within the Secretary to Council's Office, the Institutional Resilience Team continues to develop guidance to support departments in establishing their business continuity plans. In addition, the team encourages you to contact them to discuss business continuity arrangements within your department. The team is able to offer guidance and advice in the form of meetings, workshops and presentations and can develop bespoke sessions to focus on the issues that are pertinent to individual departments.
