Structure and Responsibilities
Ordinance 18 on Health and Safety in the University sets out the fundamental duties and responsibilities of all and the role of Heads of Department in particular regarding health and safety in the University.
‘Safety in the University’ is specified in University Regulation 26 (Safety Regulations) as setting out the “University Health and Safety Policy and detailed Regulations governing health and safety precautions”.
The University’s Health, Safety and Well-being website has been established to provide ‘Safety in the University’ as referred to in Regulation 26 and Ordinance 18 and support the Policy Statement, which includes the University's strategic health and safety goal, its approach to risk management and defines general organisation, arrangements and responsibilities.
Guidance for all Heads of Department is provided here and there are specific requirements on School of Life Science, School of Engineering, WMG, Department of Chemistry, Department of Physics and Warwick Medical School as departments with laboratories or research facilities that have specific hazards and recognised high risk activities.
The University Health and Safety Executive Committee is the formal Committee of Council that considers and advises the Council (and the Senate where relevant) on all matters relating to health and safety including health & safety policy, performance, and strategy.
The University Genetic Modificaton and Biosafety Committee is a sub committee of the University Health and Safety Executive Committee and has delegated responsibility from the Registrar for subjecting projects, facilities, and biological materials across the University to the necessary level of oversight, authorisation and risk management.
The University consults with staff and students on health and safety in various ways. The University Health and Safety Committee provides the senior forum considering health and safety issues of concern to staff and to students and advice on how objectives could best be achieved. The University Health and Safety Committee reports to the University Health and Safety Executive Committee.
Health and Safety in the University is further consulted on and discussed through an number of Local Area Health and Safety Committees.
