General Rules

Below are some general rules relating to the Natural Gas safety.

1. Only Gas Safe Registered Engineers with the appropriate qualifications are legally allowed to work on natural gas appliances and installations or to carry out maintenance and safety testing.

2. Departments must not connect into the gas supply infrastructure pipe work.

3. Departments must submit any requests for off-takes from the gas supply infrastructure pipe work to the Head of Estates Services and to the Director of Health and Safety and MUST obtain authorisation from the Head of Estates Services and the Director of Health and Safety for off-takes from the gas supply infrastructure pipe work.

4. Departments must:


a. Have formal written agreement with the Estates Office that the Estates Office will organise the maintenance and safety testing of local gas pipe work and appliances connected to the gas supply and formal reporting of the maintenance and safety testing to the Department; OR

b. Use Estates Office approved suppliers for maintenance and safety testing of local gas pipe work and appliances connected to the gas supply; OR

c. Obtain written confirmation from the Head of Estates Services that their contractors for maintenance and safety testing of local gas pipe work and appliances meet the necessary Gas Safe requirements.

d. Submit to and obtain authorisation from the Head of Estates Services and the Director of Health and Safety for any member of suitably qualified member of staff who they want to be authorised to carry out work on or modify or maintain or safety test natural gas pipe work and appliances.

e. Ensure that staff and students do not carry out work on or modify natural gas pipe work and appliances: unless the Department has obtained formal approval for specific members of staff to be formally authorised above.
