JOHN PHILLIPS - DIRECTOR OF HEALTH AND SAFETY

John has been a health and safety professional for over 20 years. He started his working life in the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm, working on avionics and weapons systems, before joining the railway industry where he cut his teeth as a health and safety manager. He then joined RoSPA as a consultant in 1996, and has worked in the training and consultancy sector since in a variety of senior roles. He joined the University in February 2014, and he took up the role of Director in January 2015. In addition to his engineering background he has a degree in psychology and a particular interest in behavioural safety.

CAROLINE FARREN - SENIOR HEALTH & SAFETY ADVISER

Caroline has over 25 years' experience in health, safety and the environment as well as occupational hygiene and has worked at a senior or management level in a variety of different health and safety roles across the public, private and consultancy sector. Caroline has a degree in Environmental Technology and a postgraduate diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Management. She started employment as an environmental consultant before moving into occupational hygiene and finally health and safety, supporting many industries over this time from the aerospace, car manufacturing and railway sectors through to engineering, education and construction. Caroline joined the University in March 2010 and is keen to instil a pragmatic approach to health and safety.

CHARLOTTE GREEN - SENIOR OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH ADVISOR

Charlotte Joined the University November 2019 in the role of Senior Occupational Health Advisor. Charlotte qualified as a registered nurse obtaining a degree in 2015, she worked within the NHS on an acute medical unit prior to commencing her career in Occupational Health. Charlotte studied for the Occupational Health diploma in 2019 and has worked within various organisations such as; Jaguar Landrover, West Midlands Police and an Occupational Health provider known as Team Prevent.

GRAHAM HAKES - SENIOR HEALTH & SAFETY ADVISER

Graham joined the University in 2017 having worked in the field of Health and Safety for over 27 years. He is a qualified Environmental Health Officer and has spent 23 years working in the fields of pollution control, public health, food safety and health and safety; managing teams of professional officers. Graham has dealt with many varied situations across a spectrum of these areas and has many years of experience in enforcing safety law, education campaigns and giving advice. In 2014, Graham moved to a private education provider at senior level management, managing a compliance team (food safety and health and safety) in the UK and internationally. He is keen on 'simplifying' safety messages to make them relevant, understandable and practical.

IAN GRAHAM - BIOSAFETY ADVISER

Ian joined the health & safety team in March 2015, and provides advice on all aspects of biological safety and biosecurity across the University. He graduated from Warwick with a degree in biochemistry, before studying for his PhD at the University of Leicester. His postdoctoral research took him to Nottingham University and then to Royal Holloway, University of London, where he worked in a team investigating gene therapy treatments for neuromuscular diseases, some of which have recently been the subject of clinical trials. Ian then made the transition to a full-time biological safety role when he moved to the Welcome Trust Sanger Institute in Cambridge.

MAYUR PATEL – HEALTH AND SAFETY OFFICER

Mayur graduated from Coventry University with a degree in Applied Chemistry, before studying towards his PgC in Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology at the University of Wolverhampton. After working in the Contaminated Land and Water Industry for 17 years made the transition to work at the University of Warwick in 2015 where he worked with WBS, Chemistry and Sociology. Mayur joined the University Health and Safety Team in May 2017, working as the Health and Safety Administration Officer, providing administrational support to the department. Mayur on completion of his H&S qualification now holds a role as a Health and Safety Officer supporting the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of social Sciences.

MARY BAGNALL – HEALTH AND SAFETY OFFICER

Mary joined the Health & Safety Team within the University of Warwick in Nov 2016 as the Health and Safety Officer for the Departments of Life Sciences and Warwick Medical School. Mary graduated from Staffordshire University with a degree in Applied Biology and began work in the Bacteriology Department at the then Veterinary Laboratories Agency. Whilst at the agency, she gained a Master’s degree in Medical Microbiology, at Surrey University whilst continuing to work on different research projects. Areas of interest included phenotypic and genotypic characterisation of a number of important food-borne zoonotic pathogens. From 2010, Mary moved into a dual role combining health and safety duties with laboratory research projects and consequently went on to obtain her NEBOSH certificate. Since 2015, Mary made the transition into a full-time safety role as the Health and Safety Advisor for the National Institute for Biological Standards and Controls (NIBSC) at South Mimms.

GILL PRINCE – HEALTH AND SAFETY OFFICER

Gill joined the Health and Safety team in February 2022 as a Health and Safety Officer for the Department of Life Sciences and Warwick Medical School. Gill graduated from Aberdeen University with a BSc and MSc in Zoology and Crop Protection and has worked in a variety of research posts within government institutes and Warwick Crop Centre focusing on the development of novel control methods for sustainable pest and disease programmes, bee health and biopesticide registration and commercialisation. Gill has been actively involved in Health and Safety in her research positions and is a qualified first aider.

IAN ROSE - HEALTH AND SAFETY OFFICER

Ian joined Health & Safety Team at the University of Warwick in June 2017, initially serving as the Health and Safety Officer (HSO) within the School of Engineering, and since November 2021, he assumed the role of HSO for the Campus and Commercial Services Group (CCSG).

Ian's academic journey includes earning a BSc in Genetics from the University of Birmingham in 2005 and subsequently obtaining an MSc in Biochemistry from the University of Sussex the following year. He served as a research technician for over 8 years at the Centre for Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at the University of Birmingham. During this period, Ian took the role of Health and Safety Coordinator for the research department, achieving the NEBOSH Certificate in 2013.

In 2015, Ian transitioned to a full-time health and safety role at Coventry City Council, contributing as a Health and Safety Technical Officer. His commitment to professional development continued, culminating in the completion of the NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety in 2017.

STEPHANIE BROWN - HEALTH AND SAFETY OFFICER

Stephanie joined the Health and Safety Team at University of Warwick in March 2022, and is based in the Department of Physics. After graduating from the University of Birmingham with a MSc in Environmental Health Stephanie went on to become a H&S and Food Safety Consultant alongside studying for a PGDip in Health, Safety and the Environment. In 2020 Stephanie achieved Grad IOSH status and in 2022 became a Chartered Practitioner of Environmental Health which is the highest level of professional achievement within the environmental health profession.

ALLAN STEEL - HEALTH AND SAFETY OFFICER

Allan joined the University of Warwick in June 2021 as the Health & Safety Officer for Estates, his responsibilities are principally working alongside Maintenance and Facilities, but also supporting Fire, Accommodation, and Capital Projects.

He graduated from De Montfort University with a BA (Hons) Degree in Business Administration. Early professional roles in Hospitality Management and experience in Food Safety followed.

Allan then completed his NEBOSH General Certificate, and has since gained safety management experience in Retail, Warehousing, and became a Health & Safety Manager at IKEA. Prior to joining the University he was working for PepsiCo as a Health & Safety Project Leader.

DANIELLE CARROLL - OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH SECRETARY

Danielle has worked at the University of Warwick since January 2019, initially as an administrator in the Academic Development Centre.

Since November 2019 Danielle has been the Occupational Health secretary providing administration and clerical support. The University introduced the Occupational Health Service in 2001 which operates within the Health and Safety department.

Before joining the University of Warwick Danielle worked for 7 years as an administrator for RICS and prior to that worked in customer service in both the airline and retail industries.

LISA GRIMSLEY - HEALTH AND SAFETY TRAINING ADMINISTRATION OFFICER

Lisa joined the Health & Safety Team at the University of Warwick in March 2019, her previous role at the University was as a Recruitment, Training and Quality Assistant looking after Campus Cleaning Services based within the Estates department. She has experience of all aspects of Recruitment and delivering Induction programmes to new starters at varying levels. Lisa is also an approved trainer and assessor for The British Institute of Cleaning Science. Before moving to the University Lisa worked as a Store Trainer within the retail sector and completed various roles during her 13 years within this area including Customer Service, HR and Public Relations.

SUZIE LYNN - HEALTH AND SAFETY ADMINISTRATION OFFICER

Suzie graduated from Coventry University with a BA (Hons) degree in Criminology in 2016 before joining Cambridgeshire Constabulary in a civilian role. She then moved to Warwickshire Police in 2019. Suzie joined the University of Warwick in 2021, initially as an administrative assistant. She then joined the Health and Safety team as the Health and Safety Administration Officer in June 2022.

LORRAINE BLACKWELL - HEALTH AND SAFETY OFFICER

Lorraine joined the University in 2008 working for Warwick Conferences as a Duty Manager, with overall responsibility of health, safety and welfare of all staff and guests on the premises. Lorraine was actively part of the local internal Health & Safety meetings and assisted the Facilities Manager with all Health & Safety related tasks. Lorraine became Office Manager in 2018 within Warwick Conferences with responsibility for Health and Safety within the Sales & Marketing office. In 2020, Lorraine became a Departmental Administrator for CCSG Directorate, supporting Warwick Retail and Warwick Arts Centre, as well as being CCSG H&S Committee Secretary working closely with Graham Hakes and Ian Rose to highlight and resolve issues. She joined the School of Engineering in September 2022 and is currently studying towards her NEBOSH General Certificate.

GRACE HILL - OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH ADVISOR

Grace Joined the University October 2022 in the role of Occupational Health Advisor. Grace qualified as a registered nurse obtaining a degree in 2017, she worked within the NHS on surgical wards including liver transplantation at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham before commencing her career in Occupational Health. Grace is currently studying towards her Occupational Health Degree and has previously worked for Occupational Health at Western Power Distribution/National Grid.

GORDON LOACH - FIRE SAFETY ADVISER

Gordon’s professional background prior to specialising safety is operational management in a Category B prison, this including a secondment into managing and leading the internal audit, risk, and assurance department. Gordon has previously been the Health, Safety and Fire Manager for male prison and later through promotion the Senior Fire Safety Advisor and Deputy Head of Health, Safety and Fire for 6 privately managed prisons and community intervention services in deprived communities all with multi-geographical coverage. During his time in this sector Gordon has been trained as a Hostage Negotiator, Method of Entry Specialist, incident commander, BSI qualified lead ISO 45001 auditor and built a wealth a safety qualifications and experience. Gordon graduated at Warwick University having completed a NEBOSH Diploma in 2023. In addition to his professional experience, he has an honours degree in International Relations and outside of work enjoys fishing, football and family life.

MONIKA PROKESOVA - COMPLIANCE OFFICER

Monika originally trained as organic chemist. She joined the Chemistry department at the University of Warwick in November 2015 where she worked first as research technician and later in the departmental technical support team. During that time, she got more involved with local Health & Safety matters and in 2019 Monika completed a General NEBOSH Certificate. In April 2021 Monika joined the Estates Maintenance department where she was part of Electrical Services team, supervising several contracts with external companies. While with Estates she completed IWFM Level 3 Certificate in Facilities Management and ILM Level 3 Diploma in Leadership and Management. From October 2023 Monika joined H&S team on temporary basis as Compliance officer for Central Science departments (Chemistry, Physics and Engineering).

 

KATE THOMPSON -

HEALTH AND SAFETY OFFICER

Kate graduated from University of Birmingham in 2013 with a BSc in Chemistry. She has since applied this knowledge within the hazardous waste sector, providing specialist advice and technical guidance to a wide range of industries. In 2020 she gained two primary competence certificates from the CIWM in managing both the transfer and the physiochemical treatment of hazardous waste. Kate joined the University in 2022, keen to apply innovative and sustainable disposal solutions in her role as Waste & Recycling manager, before joining the Health & Safety team in 2024.
