Brief descriptor

Staff working with high power lasers (Classes 3, 3B and 4) must be suitably trained to understand the hazards associated with lasers and laser applications, they must be able to carry out risk assessments and employ safe systems of work. There are in addition aspects of laser safety management (administration) which it is necessary to understand and apply to complement the risk assessment process and implementation of control measures. This course covers all these aspects.

Who is it for?

Members of University staff who have responsibility for and / or are involved with work with high power lasers and laser applications.

What will the participant get out of this?

  • In-depth knowledge about hazards and risks presented by lasers.
  • Understand administrative arrangements and precautions which must be taken to ensure risks from work with lasers are kept ‘as low as reasonably practicable’, particularly risks of eye damage, skin burns and fire.
  • Become expert in carrying out suitable and sufficient laser risk assessments, including relevance of MPE and NOHD.
  • Become expert in writing safe systems of work for lasers and laser applications.
  • Set procedures in place for incident situations (contingency plans).

Any prior knowledge or experience required?

Attendees will or will be intending to work with lasers, or will have some previous knowledge. They will be be familiar with laser work applications .
