Management Information Service
The Management Information Application Management Service provides University Staff with information and tools in support of decision making. To date these have included what-if business modelling tools and complex reports that consolidate data from many systems and present it in a unified manner.
The service is accessed from web links embedded in insite intranet web pages. The outputs from the service are delivered by a number of methods, including the web, eMail and hard copy output. If there is a business need the delivery methods may be expanded to include MS Office and mobile devices.
Benefits of the service
- The service can significantly reduce effort required to model business scenarios and present complex data in a clear and usable form. Examples of success to date in these areas include student five year progression planning, annual academic statistics production and reporting on application data, in all these cases the effort expended has reduced
- The service provides full traceability of data, allowing users to drill into the underlying detail behind summary numbers, improving confidence in data and identifying anomalies
- The service can provide historical perspective on current trends by storing historical data, allowing year on year reporting
- The service uses a single database to deliver data ensuring a consistent set of figures can be used when making management decisions
Accessing the service
If you have an area where you think the MI service can be beneficially deployed then contact the service owner des dot butcher at warwick dot ac dot uk who will assist in drafting a business case which will be reviewed and prioritised by the MI service board at it's next meeting.
Service availability and charging
The service is supported during core business hours. Outside of these hours no guarantee on availability is made but the service is left running. There is one scheduled period of downtime on a Saturday for regular maintenance.
The service is currently centrally funded and no charges are made for accessing the service or new developments. The Management Information Service board prioritise developments and meets on a termly basis to review work completed, and agree future work. In the event of an urgent requirement users can engage third parties to undertake development, as guided by the MI service team, however this will incur additional expenditure
Data governance
The data within the Warehouse is accessible to staff members according to the rules laid down by the department that owns the data and statutory requirements as laid down in relevant legislation.
