Hotspot-secure
We are just in the process of rolling out a new hotspot service. This is designed to be more secure, and also simplify the log-on process. More details can be found here,
hotspot-secure
Once you have logged in, you shouldn't see any difference from the normal hotspot service. We hope you find it to be useful!

New resnet bandwidth monitoring
We have just completed an overhaul of the way that bandwidth is allocated on ResNet. This was much needed work, that we are very pleased that we have been able to carry out.
As a further enhancement, we have also increased each users allocation of bandwidth to be 10mb down, 5mb up. We'll update the service pages in due course. Let us know if you have any problems!

External Wireless?
We have just put up an external wireless access point in the Piazza - we'd like to see if it gets used much (we'll monitor the number of users associated with it) and also how useful it is. We'll keep it up for a year and see how popular it is.

Recent changes
The VPN service so that it will support iPad and iPhone 'anyconnect'. More details can be found here:
The IPAM system has been upgraded to the lastest software version. If you run DHCP or DNS for your department, and want to take a look at the new system, drop the service desk an email and we can take you through it.
Project updateA brief update on the items we have been looking at
We have increased the University bandwidth over JANET to 10Gb (we still need to do the back-up link)
This involved putting in new firewall service, and we will look at how that can better support the University
We now want to look how we can provide even more bandwidth to ResNet - we are evaluating new devices to manage this
We have a project underway to look at NAC
We are working on an update to the IPAM system
We are looking at 'energywise' and how it can support the green agenda for the University
Future projects include
NTP
Out of Band management for the network (and remote sites)
Wireless networkingS
The wireless network has now,
Replaced 100% of the old access points for the new University standard providing 802.11a,g,n
Provided wireless coverage for 96% of the centrally timetabled rooms
Wireless Coverage Survey's ongoing
Things coming up:
Under review
2011What will we be looking at next year?
Over the coming year we have a number of projects that we will be looking at
10Gb upgrade
Better bandwidth management for ResNet
'Green' Computing (from the network perspective)
Network Authentication Control (NAC)
VPN anyconnect (allowing your iPad / iPhone to connect to the VPN service)
Updates to the software and hardware for the IPAM system
Taking on NTP and making it more resilient
Looking at changes to the way the wireless network works
We'll be happy to answer any questions on these features and services.
