The Role of the Committee Secretariat at Warwick: Beyond Taking Notes

Who is it for?

Colleagues who are engaged with servicing University committees or working groups and anyone interested in this key aspect of university administration.

Content

The session will consider the key aspects of servicing a committee at Warwick including communication with the chair, meeting preparation and follow-up, understanding terms of reference, the importance of agenda setting and minute writing and the instrumental role of the Secretariat in implementing the resolutions of the committee. A broad overview of the governance system in which Secretariats operate will also be provided.

The session will cover many general aspects of committee servicing but will highlight these in the context of Warwick's system of governance. There is likely to be an element of participation/group activity during the session. While the session will provide key points to bear in mind when writing minutes, this will not be the main focus of the session and more detailed advice and guidance on this will be available from the Governance Team in the Deputy Registrar's Office, and through the specific session “Minute Writing in Warwick Style”.

What will I get out of this?

Participants should gain a good understanding of the role of the committee secretariat at Warwick inclusive of membership, terms of reference, key elements of agenda setting and minute writing, communication and implementation of decisions within the broader Warwick governance framework. An overview of the further information available as reference materials to support committee servicing will also be provided.

Led by Yvonne Salter Wright, Kirsty Pennington, Deputy Registrar’s Office.
