Postgraduate Certificate in Academic and Professional Practice (PCAPP)
|
The PCAPP certificate was introduced in October 2005. Prior to that it was the Warwick Teaching Certificate. PCAPP has a broader focus than the WTC. In particular, it is endeavouring to be more responsive to individual needs and offers participants opportunities to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding in relation to three key elements in an ‘academic profile’: Teaching and Learning, Research and Academic Management.
Some comments from PCAPP participants about the workshops"Lots of tips/examples with teaching situations" "I will integrate ideas from lecturers from different departments and the two excellent PCAPP tutors" "I found it extremely interesting and inspiring and I hope to be able to try some of these methods in future" "I found the teaching and learning methods used on the workshop effective: Gave me food for thought on how to make lab work more relevant to students after their degree" How can I find out more?If you have an enquiry about the PCAPP programme or application procedure, please email to pcapp@warwick.ac.uk Who is eligible to apply?Members of University staff whose teaching at Warwick is of sufficient quantity and type to allow them to fully participate in the course. Typically, participants need to be teaching approximately 30 hours per academic year in order to successfully undertake the activities and associated assessed work. This will ideally comprise a range of teaching activities at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level e.g. lecturing, small group teaching (seminars, problem classes) supervision etc. New members of academic staff who are on probation enrol on the certificate as a condition of their probation. How do I apply for a place? You need to complete the PCAPP registration form What happens next?We will contact you, normally by email, to let you know whether you have been offered a place. You will then need to attend the next Welcome (induction) event for new participants. These are normally held in Autumn and Spring each year, depending on demand. We must have received your completed registration form in advance before we can book your place at the PCAPP Welcome. We are holding two small Welcome sessions on Thursday 10th May, 2:00-3:00 and Tuesday 15th May, time tbc. To attend either of these please contact the course secretary Jenny on pcapp@warwick.ac.uk The next Welcome session will be in the Autumn 2012 term, new applicants will be advised on the date when it has been arranged. What if I already have a teaching qualification, or have significant experience? If you a new member of staff on academic probation, the decision about whether you are required to undertake the full PCAPP certificate or may be entitled to partial or full exemption will have been made by your appointing panel. Notification of this decision is included in your appointment letter (eg there will be a paragraph that either says you need to successfully complete PCAPP as a condition of probation or that you are entitled to apply for APL or Exemption). If you are entitled to apply for APL or Exemption please read the additional information on Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) or Exemption I work in Mathematics, Statistics or a related subject area, is this for me?You have the option to join the centrally run PCAPP programme, or the Maths/Stats PCAPP. The content of the Maths/Stats PCAPP is very similar to the central PCAPP but is more closely aligned and relevant to your teaching in the subject area. Before choosing you may wish to contact Georgina Copeland, the Departmental Secretary in Mathematics, in the first instance. To register for the Maths/Stats PCAPP, complete the registration form and send to the PCAPP course secretary (as above) indicating that you are registering for the Maths/Stats route. Once you have completed the initial enrolment, your induction on the course will be dealt with by the Department. We will also write and invite you to the central induction session (which will be helpful for you but is not compulsory). What happens at the Welcome (induction) event? You will find out more about PCAPP so you can consider how best to undertake this flexible programme to meet your professional development needs. You will also receive a copy of the course handbook and will have the opportunity to meet the Course Leader and members of the team and discuss any questions you may have. How long does PCAPP take to complete? The certificate is a part-time course and normally takes up to 2 years to complete. The overall registration period is 3 years to allow additional time for completing the assessed work if this is needed, however the expectation is that participants will complete within the 2 years. In exceptional circumstances, there is the facility to apply for an additional 6 months extension with the support of your Head of Department. Further information is via left-hand links in the Course Information area. After attending the Welcome event, participants are given access to the Participants' Area of the website, which contains details of the workshops, an online booking form and lists of the current participants. |
