In or Out? The referendum of 1975

The recent referendum will not be the first time the British people will have cast a vote on whether we should be a part of a European union. European integration has been contested since the UK was first granted membership in the European Commission, the predecessor of the EU, in 1973.

The MRC are showcasing archive materials documenting the intense debate over Britain’s involvement in the European Common Market and the referendum of 1975. Including the UK’s early attempts to join and its formal entry into the European Economic Community; materials used to sway public vote; and the formation of the EU under the Maastricht Treaty.
