Before your visit

How can I find out what you have?

Information about the Modern Records Centre's archive collections is available through our online research guides and archive catalogue. Details of non-archival collections held at the Modern Records Centre is available elsewhere on our website. You can also contact us to ask for advice or further information.

Do I need to contact you before a visit?

It isn't compulsory, but we do strongly recommend that you contact us before a visit so that we can provide advice on available sources, access restrictions and any other factors which might affect your visit. A small number of collections held at the Modern Records Centre have restrictions on access introduced at the request of the owners of the archives (most notably on the archives of the Transport and General Workers' Union and its predecessors). When this is the case, information about access conditions is included in the collection level descriptions in the archive catalogue.

You do not need to contact us in advance if you want to see a thesis or Library Special Collections publication, but please check our opening times.

Can I order documents before I arrive?

Yes - we can get documents out in advance for you if you supply us with the reference numbers of the documents (at item or file level - not the reference number for the whole collection) and give us at least one full working day's notice before your visit (staff are unable to pick up enquiries or orders on Saturdays, Sundays or Bank Holiday Mondays).

Can you research a subject for me?

Although we can do a small amount of research in response to enquiries we are unable to undertake extensive research. If you are unable to visit, you may like to commission a member of the Association of Genealogists and Researchers in Archives to come in and research on your behalf.

Will I be able to access wi-fi at the MRC?

Visitors can use either eduroam or the Warwick Guest wireless network whilst at the Modern Records Centre. You can register for the Warwick Guest wi-fi service through IT Services.
