Info

3 day loan books are issued for 7 days to part time students and students registered with the University Disability Services.

Occasionally, loan periods for books from certain collections (e.g. Schools Collection, Staff Development Collection) may vary. Please ask at the Library Helpdesk on Floor 1 for more information.

How do I borrow books?

Follow the on screen instructions on the self-issue machines on Floor 1 to borrow or renew books. Items in Short Loan should be issued using the self-issue machines in the Short Loan area. Library members are advised to read the Library rules and regulations and to familiarise themselves with the borrowing, returns and renewal procedures. To avoid any unwelcome surprises please read the information about Library fines.

Why can’t I issue an item?

You may have:

  • reached your loan limit
  • fines of more than £10
  • the book you are trying to borrow may be 'Reference Only'

To ensure you have issued your books correctly please examine your receipt carefully. Your receipt will provide the date each item is due back. Please take care if you borrow a 3 day loan book. You may not be able to renew it if another student has requested a hold on it.

If you experience any problems when issuing a book, please ask for help at the Floor 1 Helpdesk. If you would like a demonstration of how to use the self-issue machines please ask any Library staff for help or watch the 'how to borrow books' video.

How do I return a book?

  • All borrowed items should be returned using the automated returns machines on Floor 1
    • Place the books one at a time on the conveyor belt; use only one machine, don't try to use both as this will cause your record to freeze. You can choose to have a printed receipt for your returned books via the touch-screen
    • You are advised to keep your receipt as proof of return until you have checked your 'My Library Account'. If you would like a demonstration on how to return items please ask Library staff for help or watch the 'returns' video
  • There is a book drop facility at the entrance to the Library. This is available 08:30-21:30 Monday to Sunday but you will not be issued with a returns receipt
  • There is also a book drop facility outside the cafe at Westwood. Collections are made daily Monday-Friday during term time (Tuesdays and Thursdays in vacation) between 14:00-15:30
  • Items that cannot be returned via the Returns Machine are those from the External Store and Document Supply items - these should be returned at the Helpdesk on floor 1
  • Returned book claim

If you notice that a book you have returned is still showing as on loan to you please complete a returned book claim.

Please note that any item remains your responsibility until it is found and removed from your Library account. If the book is not found, you will be notified and invoiced for the standard costs of replacement
