One of the largest music societies, the University of Warwick Symphony Orchestra thrives with over one hundred musicians from the student body, as well as some University staff and members from the local area. Conducted by the Director of Music and Assistant Director of Music, the Symphony Orchestra meets weekly on Tuesdays between 7 and 9.40 pm, from the first week of the academic year. A free concert is given in the second week of the year, and all are welcome to join in.
We perform concerts at least once a term in the Butterworth Hall, as well as in venues further afield, including Symphony Hall, Birmingham and the new Bridgewater Hall, Manchester. The Symphony Orchestra performs regularly with the University Chorus, and with professional vocal and instrumental soloists and choirs (recently including the City of Birmingham Symphony Chorus).
We also have regular tours abroad with venues recently including Prague, Vienna, Bratislava, Lyon, Budapest, Krakow and the unforgettable town of Ryazan in Russia, where we participated in the televised celebrations of the town's 900th anniversary. We also played at the wedding of one of India's wealthiest businessmen (all expenses paid!), flying out to Lucknow in India to play on a purpose-built revolving stage in front of 10,000 people.

Our repertoire is varied, recently including symphonies by Bruckner, Dvorák, Brahms, Shostakovich, Sibelius, Beethoven and Mahler. Other works include Verdi's Requiem, Tippett's A Child of Our Time, Elgar's Enigma Variations, Holst's Planets Suite) Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, and the operas Carmen and Yevgeny Onegin.
