Welcome from the Warden

[c]

Welcome to the Heronbank and Lakeside Student Village, the largest residential area on the campus, comprising both undergraduate and postgraduate students.  There are 18 members of residential staff who live within Lakeside and Heronbank and their role is to help ensure that residential life runs as smoothly as possible for all the students in this area.  The residential staff are likely to be your first port of call for a wide range of issues and I would encourage you to talk to them if you need any advice yourself or if you have any concerns about your fellow students.  However, I should point out that the residential staff are not likely to be able to help you with maintenance and domestic issues, such as problems with plumbing, heating, power cuts, etc.  For these issues we have a dedicated accommodation services team on site from Monday to Friday during normal working hours.  This team is headed up by the Accommodation Services Manager (ASM), Richard Amphlett, and the Assistant ASM, Kevin Golding.  Should you need to report any maintenance issues, please use the online system in the first instance or contact the accommodation supervisor for your area.  However, if your maintenance request is urgent (e.g. no power or heating) you should contact Rootes Reception (22280) or Security (22083) as soon as possible using an internal telephone.

At the beginning of the academic year, a representative is elected for every flat to ensure a clear line of communication between the students and the residential staff in the area.   A student chairperson is elected for each area to lead these Hall Committees, and once per term there is a meeting of the Village Committee, which comprises the 7 chairpersons and myself.  Should you have any ideas or more general concerns about the residences or the surrounding area, then please talk to your flat representative who will share your views with us.  The student committee system has been very proactive in the past and have successfully implemented a number of changes; covered cycle storage for Lakeside, a mail trolley to transport heavy items from central campus, smoking bins and dedicated social facility are some examples of their work.

I hope you find that the community spirit of the Village supports you in both your personal and professional development during your time in residence and I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all every success with your studies.
