Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS)

Liquid Chromatography Mass spectrometry (LC-MS, or alternatively HPLC-MS) is an analytical technique that combines the physical separation capabilities of liquid chromatography (or HPLC) with the mass analysis capabilities of mass spectrometry.

cogsHow does it work?

LC-MS is a powerful technique used for many applications which has very high sensitivity and selectivity. Generally its application is oriented towards the specific detection and potential identificationof chemicals, metabolites, peptides and proteins in a complex mixture.

Applications:

Detection of selected molecules, quantitative proteomics, metabolism studies, environmental detection, trace analysis. Often coupled with tandem mass spectrometry to obtain (via multiple reaction monitoring (MRM)) additional selectivity and improved signal to noise.

Sample Handling Requirements:

Micrograms or nanograms of material.

Complementary Techniques:

GC-MS, size exclusion chromatography-MS.
