Funded by BUCS and Sport England, Warwick Sport is bringing back it’s successful campaign Warwick Girls Can with the aim of setting a new tone for female participation on campus, as staff and students of all ages are addressed and encouraged to get active and put their health first.
Warwick Girls Can celebrates the active lives of women on campus: the woman who cycles to work to clear her mind, the woman who uses exercise to benefit her health, the woman who runs to escape and explore.
The Warwick Girls Can week of the 8 – 14 May will host a variety of free activities for women to join in with, such as Boxing, Dancing and Yoga, as well as female only free gym times. Warwick Sport aims to offer a wide variety of activities to support female participation in sport such as female only swim, football programmes for various age groups, as well as training and mentoring support for careers in sport.
Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign sets to help women overcome the fear of judgement that is stopping too many women and girls from getting active, as well as the cultural assumptions about femininity, that prevent women from engaging in sport and exercise.
Inspired by the national This Girl Can campaign, Warwick Sport aims to inspire and motivate female students and staff to get active and spend some quality time with friends or on their own, empowering them to make their own health and wellbeing a priority.
Lisa Dodd-Mayne, Director of Sport and Active Communities, said:
“Warwick Sport is keen to ensure everyone can participate in some form of exercise, activity or sport whilst being on campus, and a focus on women and girls is essential as it helps to provide opportunities in a fun and encouraging way. Warwick Sport believes that to engage women and girls, we need to think about what sport can do for them, specifically in relation to what really matters to them. Feeling liberated, free and self reliant are benefits with a longer lasting effect, and these are very important forces which enable women to become and stay active”
Warwick Sport’s vision is to support and create the most active University campus, recognising that this focus on women and girls will help to provide opportunities for self-improvement and empowerment. Warwick Sport’s direction is guided by the diverse communities that live, work, and study at the University of Warwick and seeks to engage women in a fun, safe and encouraging environment.
