Best Wishes to Professor Peter Winstanley

Peter WinstanleyWe’d like to wish Professor Peter Winstanley very best wishes as he has announced he will step down from his role as Chair of the Faculty of Medicine when he retires at the end of May. The Vice-Chancellor reported this to the recent meeting of the University Senate, and the Senate expressed its sincere thanks to Peter for his broad-ranging contribution to the activities of the University.

Peter joined Warwick in May 2010 as Dean of the Medical School and Chair of the Faculty of Medicine. Over this time, he has steered the Medical School through a period of immense challenge and growth, and broadened WMS’ external links to include an innovative relationship with the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, as well as participating in the Clinical Medicine REF panel. During his tenure, WMS has expanded its research with the establishment of new groups in Microbiology and Infection and Cancer, the introduction of the Warwick Centre for Applied Health Research and Delivery (CAHRD) and the integration of groups from the School of Social Sciences including the Royal College of Nursing Research Institute (RCNRI). The School’s research income has increased by 77% since Peter first joined Warwick, and he also led WMS in achieving the second Athena SWAN Silver award made to a UK Medical School.

Peter has focused in his role as Faculty Chair on representing the University within the NHS regionally and nationally through his role as Non-Executive Director of University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire, and strengthening the School’s governance arrangements.

He has also been acting Senior Tutor since the beginning of 2016 whilst we review how we can develop academic pastoral support at Warwick to most effectively support our students’ experience.

There will be more information on future arrangements for senior tutor provision in due course, and the recruitment process for a new Chair of the Faculty of Medicine will open internally shortly.
