Working Therapeutically with Children and Young People
Postgraduate Award
This programme has been designed for people from a wide range of employment backgrounds, including youth worker, social worker, working in education, or as a counsellor or psychotherapist. The 20 credit postgraduate award is in line with government plans to improve access to psychological therapies for children, young people and their families. This course is designed for practitioners from a wide range of backgrounds who have usually had relevant experience of working with children and young people. This includes individuals who are currently involved in counselling.
The course aims to develop advanced knowledge and understanding of different theoretical and practical approaches to working therapeutically with children and young people, based on principles of diversity, equality and social inclusion. It will enable you to critically evaluate and understand the ethical, safeguarding and legal contractual frameworks in working with children and young people and their families/caregivers. We will also critically evaluate and apply practice-based research in the field to the contexts where therapeutic work with children and young people is taking place.
This postgraduate award promotes multi-professional teamwork and multidisciplinary thinking. In the counselling and psychotherapy profession, recent developments have also included the introduction of a Senior Accreditation in Counselling Children and Young People by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.
Taught over one intensive two-day weekend, with a follow-up day after a period of independent study, practical and experiential exercises will be combined with the blended delivery of materials using a Virtual Learning Environment.
Assessment is entirely by coursework.
The University's standard entrance requirement is an undergraduate degree graded at 2:2 in any discipline. Applicants must be able to produce written work of a good standard. Applicants who do not possess an academic qualification which meets or exceeds the standard required for their chosen course of study may, in some disciplines, still be considered for admission on the basis of substantial, relevant work experience or professional training.
