Professional development courses
Whether you are looking to move into a new career or to increase your knowledge and understanding of your current work, we offer a range of qualifications at different levels, from introductory courses to postgraduate diplomas, foundation degrees to masters. Our tutors are specialists in their fields, and offer an effective mix of academic input and practical application which will equip you with the knowledge, skills and tools to become a better practitioner.

Social Work

Our MA Social Work combines 200 days of structured academic teaching, 30 days of professional skills development and two practice learning placements of 70 and 100 days. Upon successful completion of the course you are eligible to apply to the Health Care and Professions Council to become a registered social worker. Our team has a well established reputation for delivering high quality social work training, and our graduates are keenly sought and have strong employment prospects as social workers in a variety of statutory, voluntary and private organisations.

Initial Teacher Training

Our nationally recognised ITT and Specialist programmes develop the attributes, knowledge, resilience and skills required of those wishing to enter teaching in the FE and Skills Sector. There is a wide range of levels and programmes on offer including our new PG Diploma, aimed at graduates looking to teach in the FE and Skills sector.

Coaching

Students choose our coaching courses for a variety of reasons, for some it is to help in their roles as managers, others may want to move into coaching roles and for some who are established coaches it's about developing their skills further. We offer an undergraduate certificate and diploma, and a part-time MA which has been designed to increase your credibility in the coaching field and to become a specialist in your chosen area of coaching research.

Career Studies

Our portfolio of activities is focused on teaching, scholarship, consultancy and out-reach in the inter-related fields of coaching, work-related learning and career development. Our courses are designed to develop a creative and reflective stance towards the support of career development and work-related learning. We offer our two programmes, Career Development and Coaching Studies, and Career Education, Information and Guidance in Higher Education, at the following levels: MA, Postgraduate Diploma, Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Awards.

Counselling

Our programme offers you the opportunity to acquire the attributes, knowledge and understanding required by people wishing to enter this profession. Counselling and Psychotherapy is a demanding profession which requires strong self-awareness, knowledge of theory and good understanding of the application of theory to practice. We offer a range of courses from short introductory courses, undergraduate degrees and postgraduate study. Take a look at our counselling courses

Early Childhood

We were one of the first universities to offer the foundation degree in 2001 and since then over 400 early years professionals have graduated from the programme. The Early Childhood programme provides a unique blend of professional practice and academic rigour and on completion many of our students progress onto our BA Hons which we offer as a both a part-time and full-time route.

The West Midlands Centre for Excellence in Teacher Training is also based here and offers resources and training for teachers in the West Midlands area.
