I have worked in the area of literacy, language and numeracy (LLN) skills since 1981. I began as a part time sessional tutor and gradually progressed into a permanent teaching/management post. In my last job I was manager, for 10 years, of the adult basic education department in a large FE college in the East Midlands. During my time there I gained a specialist qualification in supporting dyslexic students in FE and alsogained an MBA in Education Management. I was appointed as the manager of the Essential Skills Resource Centre in 2003 and along with Sara Hattersley set up a professional development centre to support the development of Essential Skills across Coventry and Warwickshire. Between 2003 and 2006 I managed a programme of skills development for LLN tutors and managers, delivered at the University and in a wide range of organisations across the sub region and region. I also undertook consultancy work with the Basic Skills Agency, LSDA, SVUK, LLU+ and CfBT. Sara and I also developed and delivered the subject specialist qualifications for literacy and ESOL teachers (initially at level 4 now at FHEQ level 5) using a blended learning approach. In 2007 the centre became part of the University and we concentrated more on the qualifications for literacy, numeracy and language teachers. I helped develop the level 5 numeracy subject specialist qualifications and taught on the literacy and numeracy courses. In addition, nationally I have been involved in many initiatives and projects using funding from the various improvement programmes in this area of work (e.g. LSIS, QIA, NRDC, CfBT) and have worked on the General Professional Recognition Scheme as an adjudicator and panel member. As an example, in the last year I was an 'expert speaker' within the LLN Improvement Programme, showcasing our blended learning teacher training programmes at Wolverhampton University, Staffordshire University, Bolton College and Learning South West. More recently, since November 2010, I have also been the Acting Director of Initial Teacher Training working with eight partner colleges across the East and West Midlands, who deliver the Diploma and Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector accredited by the University of Warwick. I now also oversee the delivery of a range of CPD programmes for teachers in the Lifelong Learning sector. |
