Saeede Haghi

About me
Saeede (Ide) Haghi
I am currently a Doctoral student at Centre for Applied Linguistics at the University of Warwick. I have been working and researching in ELT over the past 15 years, during which times I have been involved in teaching and teacher training in English for general, specific and academic purposes as well as English language assessment and testing. Prior to my Doctorate study, I gained my first MA in applied linguistics, and my second MA in language assessment and testing at the University of Warwick. My MA dissertation’s area of focus was listening tests and the effects of including the visual mode on test-takers’ performances. The project involved developing an L2 EAP listening test using multimedia stimuli to investigate the effect of the visual mode on test-takers’ performance and note-taking practices.

PhD Project

My Doctorate research under supervision of Dr Neil Murray and funded by the University of Warwick Chancellor’s International Scholarship investigates the nature and effetiveness of in-sessional Academic English Provision at Higher Education institutions across the UK.

Research Grants

ETS ‘TOEFL Researcher/Practitioner’ Grant, United States

ETS funded project (2015-2016): I was awarded the ETS practitioner fund to conduct a research study that investigated the use of an in-house placement test and a commercial placement test (i.e. the TOEFL ITP test), drawing comparisons between them in terms of curricular coverage, statistical distribution and practicality.

Research into Reading Grants Scheme, United Kingdom

Warwick WMG funded project (2017-2018): The research project, funded by IATLWarwick and Research into Reading Grants Scheme, is an investigation into how the choice of terminology/language can impact on student engagement in a range of traditional and non-traditional learners. As the main researcher, I am responsible for the design of a reading test to compare student’s engagement with two texts of different complexity (in terms of vocabulary and one which uses more complex academic language and one which uses more simple plan language) as well as an exit questionnaire and the analyses of the emerging data.
