Tsvetelina Germanova

This year I became part of the Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research DTP. Currently, I am in my master's year, which comprises of series of taught modules and two mini projects. The interdisciplinary topics covered in the taught modules, ranging from cutting edge research and the use of the newest microscopic techniques to statistics, programing and computational modelling, have been really interesting for me and a great foundation for exciting quantitative research.

Education

2013 - 2016 BSc Medical Biochemistry, University of Leicester
Final year experimental project: Examining the effects of Parkin expression on Huntington's disease (HD)-like phenotypes in yeast. Supervisor Prof. Flaviano Giorgini.

I studied the effects of the mitochondrial quality control protein Parkin on HD-like phenotypes in yeast. Mitochondrial disturbances are largely implicated in HD pathogenesis. My experimental study provided evidence in support of this theory by showing attenuation of the HD-like phenotypes by Parkin in yeast.

2015 Summer studenship, Department of Biochemistry, University of Leicester
Project: Exploring the interaction between Estrogen Receptors (ER) and Ebf1, Supervisor Dr. Ildiko Gyory

Recent evidence showed Ebf1-mediated modulation of ER activity. This posed the question of as to whether ER could also modulate Ebf1 activity. Ebf1 has been previously shown to be involved in breast cancer and proof of ER regulation of Ebf1 activity would therefore suggest a molecular mechanism for the higher prevalence of breast cancer in women.
