Before You Apply

Before you make your application, you need to make sure you have considered the following key questions:

Please note for research degrees, you should also consult the additional guidance provided here.

Will you meet the admissions requirements?

All courses have their own entry requirements, which can different substantially depending on the programme of study. You’ll need to check this on a case-by-case basis, although as a guide the following are generally the minimum standards we require:

  • For research degrees: at least an upper second class UK honours degree or equivalent.
  • For taught degrees: at least a lower second class UK honours degree or equivalent (although some courses require an upper second).

Do you meet the English language requirements?

The University requires evidence that your English Language capability is of a level that will enable you to succeed on your chosen course of postgraduate study. Different courses ask for different standards of English language achievement.

Can you provide two academic references?

You will need to ensure, in good time, that your referees are willing and able to write a reference (letter of recommendation) for you. If you provide a valid email address in the online application form, we will contact them directly on your behalf.

You should nominate referees who can provide an informed view of your academic ability and suitability for your chosen programme of study. The University will accept professional references if you have been out of higher education for over five years. Please note that personal references, such as those from family and friends, are not acceptable.

References must be submitted in English, unless otherwise permitted by the department.

If submitted via paper, the reference should be on professional or institutional letter-headed paper. If this is not possible - for example, where a referee has retired - the reference should still include the referee's contact details and current (or relevant previous) position.

You should ask your referees to comment on your academic ability and general suitability for the proposed programme of study, and to provide any other information they consider to be relevant to your application. If they have knowledge of your recent study, it would be helpful if they could indicate the standard attained.
