Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Classics and Ancient History

Standard Duration: 3-4 years full-time, up to 7 years part-time

English Language: IELTS 7.0

The Department has a lively community of postgraduate research students contributing to the research in the Department. All research programmes include a programme of induction, work-in-progress seminars and a graduate conference. We are looking for applicants with a strong academic record, usually shown by a high mark in an undergraduate dissertation, e.g. 68% or above (if taken) and/or an overall average of 65% or over in an undergraduate degree. Candidates for MPhil and PhD study are usually expected to have or be undertaking a Masters degree.

Candidates research and write a 60,000 word dissertation, which will constitute an original contribution to knowledge.

The Department offers expertise in a wide range of research areas, including Epigraphy; Numismatics; Visual and material culture; Art; Ancient Medicine; Ancient Athletics; Greek Social & Cultural History; Late Antiquity; Sexuality and Gender; Ancient physiognomy; Ancient rhetoric; Augustus and the early Principate; 18/19th-century reception studies; Greek religion & Greek sanctuaries; Greek political history; Latin Literature & its Reception; Reception of Greek thought in Arabic culture; Platonism in the Renaissance; Roman Economy; Roman Syria; Sicily and North Africa; The Western Mediterranean.

Entry Requirements

At least a good 2:i undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in Classics, Ancient History or a related area. Applicants to the MPhil or PhD are expected to have successfully completed (or be completing) a Masters programme in a relevant area.
