Study Abroad

Classics & Ancient History

Classics is the original multi-cultural discipline - the study of the civilisations of Greece and Rome and their interaction with other Mediterranean cultures of the ancient world.  Classics at Warwick includes language and literature, history and philosophy, art and archaeology; you'll study politics and imperialism, gender and ethnicity - even domestic issues like food, drink and housing.  You'll also have the opportunity for some practical archaeology at nearby Roman sites.

Example modules

Roman Britain

The module considers Rom's interaction with the island of Britain over a period of more than 400 years, during which Britain developed from its Celtic origins to play an often major part in the history of the Empire as a whole.  It provides an outline history of events, examining the literary and other sources that help establish that history, while at the same time demonstrating through the material remains some of the rich variety that made up Roman occupation both on an official level and in terms of day-to-day life.

Greek Language

It is hard to imagine what European civilisation would be like without the legacy of Greece.  The language alone has give us the prototype for all major literary genres; from epic, tragedy and comedy all the way through to the romantic novel.  Greek, with its flexibility of expression, who also the first European language used for the study of history, the formation of philosophy and the investigation of mathematical principles.  it was in Greek that the New Testament was first written, and the language continues to be the basis of a vast number of English words.

This module aims to introduce students to the main elements of the structre of Greek in a logicaland systematic way and so enable them to read and traslate passages of adapted Greek with growing ease and confidence.

The Classics & Ancient History Department prefers students to come for a full year, but will consider part year students depending on module availability.
