Theatre Studies

Studying at the Department of Theatre, Performance and Cultural Policy Studies at Warwick will give you the opportunity to develop your own critical and creative responses to a diverse range of theatre and performance practices in a stimulating environment. You will be able to take advantage of the University Arts Centre which includes two theatres and offers an exciting and innovative programme of drama, music and dance. You will also benefit from the CAPITAL project, which involves a partnership between the School of Theatre, Performance and Cultural Policy Studies, the Department of English and Comparative Literary Studies and the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Example module

Introduction to Theatre

This module seeks to provide a basis for students’ studies in Theatre throughout their degree programme through an exploration of western theatre within its historical contexts, a consideration of the contribution of significant theorists and practitioners to western theatre; as well as an introduction to some nonwestern theatrical forms and an examination of the place of Applied Theatre in the contemporary theatre context. It will introduce students to historiographical and methodological problems in the study of theatre and to ways of analysing performance texts, performance techniques, spaces and audiences, while developing an awareness of the wide range of topics and approaches that constitute the discipline.

Contemporary Performance Studies

The autumn term of Aspects of Practice focuses on developing a toolbox of skills in creating performance. Students will explore a range of approaches to devising performance (creating performance from scratch or developing a script from an idea, an image, or a form), learn technical aspects of theatre relating to sound design, recording, etc. Students will use these skills to develop a short devised piece this term and build on them in spring and summer terms.

A number of third year options are offered by the department each year depending on demand and staff availability. Students should check with the
Department to see what subjects are available. This Department is unable to accept Exchange students.
