In my home country of Trinidad & Tobago the government offer scholarships to encourage young students to travel overseas for their further studies. I did very well in my secondary school exams and was lucky enough to be awarded a scholarship to come and study in the UK. My government pay the tuition fees and I receive an allowance for cost of living and other expenses. I think I am fortunate to have this opportunity and will be proud to return home after I graduate so that I can give something back. I wanted to study Law and needed to choose a country where my qualification would be recognised back home. My aunt had studied at Cambridge and recommended that I consider the UK for my Bachelors degree. Our school had been visited by a Warwick Alumnus and there were some brochures in the library, so I started reading about Warwick. I did some further research online and came to know about the Law School and how they developed the concept of teaching Law within context. This was something that really interested me and when I mentioned to my aunt that I was considering Warwick she was very supportive, saying that she understood it was a very well ranked institution in the UK. I found the UCAS application process fairly straightforward; whenever I had any questions or concerns I would contact the Undergraduate Admissions team who were always very helpful and supportive. It took about 3-4 months to get a decision on my application, during which time I read everything I could about the course and University campus.
I had never been to the UK before so I wanted to make sure I was as prepared as I could be. When I finally arrived I was so excited to recognise the campus from the pictures I had seen online! One of the best things about Warwick is multi-cultural mix of people which contributes enormously to the student social scene. The opportunity to interact with people from different backgrounds and cultures really enriches your own experience. I have joined the African Caribbean Society which holds regular social dinners and alumni meetings, and have enjoyed events hosted by the Student Cinema. I am also a member of the Islamic Society and find it reassuring that there is a Prayer Hall onsite whenever I need it. I find life on campus very relaxed. I have no worry about getting to lectures on time since everything is located within easy walking distance. As for my course, I love it! The lecturers are so talented they make the subject come alive. My academic experience so far has definitely changed the way that I think and challenged any preconceptions I had about studying Law. I have learned so much already and I am only half way through my course. I look forward to what the future brings, and would encourage anyone thinking about Warwick to seriously consider it.
