What will I learn?

This flexible course enables talented mathematicians to pursue sophisticated theory of modern application domains requiring large-scale data analysis. Data Science questions how to make sense of the vast volumes of data generated daily in modern life, from social networks to scientific research and finance, and suggests sophisticated computing techniques for processing this deluge of information.

Warwick is leading the way in the provision of UK undergraduate degrees in this emerging discipline at the interface of Statistics and Computer Science. Our modules are taught by specialists from the Departments of Statistics, Computer Science and Mathematics, each of which is at the forefront of research. The course provides an essential mix of highly developed mathematical, statistical and computing skills for those interested in a career in information technology. Alongside this core knowledge, you will develop expertise in specialist areas of machine learning, data mining and algorithmic complexity. You will also acquire skills in analytical thinking, cross-disciplinary communication, mathematical and statistical modelling, algorithm design and software engineering, thoroughly preparing you for other careers including manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, finance, telecoms, scientific research, academia, teaching and management.

Your first year provides background knowledge and fundamental skills in Data Science, which are further embedded in your second year. From this point you will also acquire more specialist expertise, gaining practical experience of industrial software engineering through group project work. Your final year is focused on applying all these skills, culminating in an individual project on a topic of your choice, involving extended analysis of a substantial data set.

How will I learn?

You will learn through a combination of lectures, small-group tutorials and practical sessions based in both departments’ well-equipped undergraduate computing laboratories. The computer laboratories in the Department of Computer Science are open 24/7. We encourage and guide students in tackling a variety of theoretical exercises and computing tasks. In their final year, BSc Data Science students work on a project involving extensive analysis of a substantial data set.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by a combination of closed and open-book examinations, continuous assessment and project work, depending on your options.

What opportunities are there to study abroad?

We support student mobility through study abroad programmes and all students have the opportunity to apply for an intercalated year abroad at one of our partner universities. The Study Abroad Team based in the Office for Global Engagement offers support for these activities, and the Department's dedicated Study Abroad Co-ordinator can provide more specific information and assistance.

A levels in Applied Subjects and Mixed Portfolios Candidates considered on an individual basis. Grades required similar to those for candidates taking academic A and AS qualifications.

International Baccalaureate 38 points including 7 in Higher Level Mathematics

Access Courses Access to HE Diploma (QAA-recognised) including appropriate subjects with distinction grades in all level 3 units, and Mathematics grade A* at A level or equivalent.

Interviews We do not typically interview applicants.Offers are made based on your predicted and actual grades, along with your personal statement. Occasionally, some applicants may be interviewed, for example candidates returning to study or those with non-standard qualifications.

What modules could I study?

First year core modules may include Linear Algebra; Mathematical Analysis; Sets and Numbers; Statistical Laboratory; Introduction to Probability; Mathematical Techniques; Programming for Computer Scientists and Design of Information Structures. Second year core modules may include Stochastic Processes; Mathematical Methods; Mathematical Statistics; Database Systems; Algorithms and Software Engineering. Optional modules may include Artificial Intelligence; Linear Statistical Modelling; Machine Learning; Complexity of Algorithms, to name a few.

What careers can a Warwick degree in Data Science lead to?

Currently, global demand for combined statistical and computing expertise outstrips supply, with evidence-based predictions suggesting a major shortage in this area for at least the next 10 years. For graduates in Data Science this shortage presents opportunities to forge careers in a large number of areas involving quantitative data analysis and computational skills. These include commerce (especially e-commerce), finance, government, genomics and other areas of "big science", entertainment and sport, education and academic research. Graduates will also be highly adaptable to new data-related challenges as they arise, perhaps in hitherto unforeseen fields.
