Student Profile: Alexander Parker, 4th year, MChem
'I chose to study chemistry as it offers many routes into the job market for a variety of professions. The thing I like most is the lab work which is intellectually stimulating. I also like the ability to get most of my work done in the day, leaving me time to enhance my degree with all the other opportunities Warwick offers. I was given the chance to work in a research group during my summer holiday, where I attended national chemistry conferences and got paid through the Warwick Undergraduate Research Scholarship Scheme. I’ve also been able to pursue my hobbies, playing in the brass band and winning the top award at the national concert band festival conducting the wind orchestra.
I never realised how much I would enjoy studying for my degree. I’ve been surprised by how friendly the staff are, and how willing people are to help'.
Specialised degrees such as Chemistry with Medicinal Chemistry involve experts from the pharmaceutical industry and expose you to challenges in therapeutic drug discovery.
Warwick Chemistry is a vibrant department with one of the newest teaching laboratories, equipped with the latest instrumentation.
Major investment has provided outstanding infrastructure for both undergraduate study and research including a High Field NMR and Ion Cyclotron Centre and most recently, a £24m interdisciplinary centre for Materials and Analytical Science.
All degree courses are accredited (MChem), or have formal recognition (BSc) by the Royal Society of Chemistry and provide a path for students to become Chartered Chemists.
The breadth of research undertaken within the Department allows our final year MChem students the widest range of topics for their research project.
Multidisciplinarity is emphasised in teaching and research; our strong links to Physics, Life Sciences and Medicine provide students with a wide choice of future careers.
How Will I Be Taught?
Through lectures, tutorials, workshops and practical classes; innovative teaching methods include on‑line virtual learning and “clickers” to provide direct lecture-room feedback. Typically you will do 24 fullday experiments each year covering all chemistry disciplines and using the latest instrumentation. Feedback on progress is provided by on-line assignments and feedback on reports. There are typically 9–12 hours of lectures and workshops, supported by 1 or 2 tutorials and 10 hours of laboratory classes; 4th year MChem students undertake a piece of original research based on 21 hours practical work per week.
How Will I Be Assessed?
By laboratory reports, presentations, posters and essays to monitor progress and provide regular feedback, and summative examinations each year.
What Opportunities Are There For Research Internships?
Throughout your studies we offer a range of opportunities for you to gain insight and experience in research and development at Warwick, at our partner universities abroad, or in industry either in the UK or abroad. Summer placements are available in each year of your studies. We offer a 1 year internship in industry either as part of your third year, or as an intercalated year after year 2 or 3. In addition we offer a 3–6 months internship in the spring term of your third year. We have a strong track record in helping students find placements and will look at available opportunities with you and guide you through the recruitment cycle.
What Careers Can A Warwick Degree In Chemistry Lead To?
