    Introducing History

Students in this stream have a minimum of compulsory modules and the full range of choice among History Options. They are permitted – but not required – to concentrate largely on the period since 1750. Any one of the four languages offered by the Department is available to this stream.

Five or six students in this stream are selected to spend the Second Year studying in Canada or the US: our current exchange partners are Queens University (Canada), Columbia University (NY) and the Universities of Wisconsin, South Carolina, California and Connecticut. The University contributes towards travel costs. A similar number of students, following the second year of their studies, choose to spend an additional year at a European university under student exchange arrangements. They return for their final year in Warwick. Universities currently within the scheme are Berlin TU, Darmstadt, Oldenburg, Blaise-Pascal (Clermont-Ferrand), Turin, Ca’Foscari (Venice), Madrid Complutense and Seville.

    Assessment

Students in all History degree courses are assessed through a combination of timed examination and long (4,500 word) essays, and, in the Third Year, a 9,000 word dissertation. In some modules, particularly in the First Year, the shorter class essays are also used in assessment. In many of their Second and Third Year modules students are free to choose between 100% examination by timed paper, or a combination of examination and assessment.
