All courses contain the same basic core of Mathematics in the first year, allowing easy specialisation later to almost all areas of Mathematics. What will I learn?

This challenging degree offers unparalleled flexibility, catering for the needs of future financial analysts, actuaries, software developers and school teachers, as well as academic and industrial mathematicians.

You will be taught by world-leading researchers in a supportive environment. Pure Mathematics modules combine the work of some of the world’s greatest thinkers, while Applied Mathematics addresses real-world problems in biology, computing, climate science and finance. Flexible options enable you to explore in depth your love of Mathematics, while studying other subjects you enjoy.

Optional Mathematics modules include Algebraic Topology, Advanced Partial Differential Equations, Geometric Group Theory, Introduction to Theoretical Neuroscience, Population Dynamics and Interacting Particle Systems. Our graduates are rigorous thinkers with advanced analytical, problem-solving and computing skills that can be applied across many career settings.

In your first year, core modules make up 75% of your course. In your second year, core modules account for 50% and the remainder may be chosen from within Mathematics or from other departments. Final-year modules are all optional, with at least 50% in Mathematics, and enable you to pursue topics at the forefront of research. The MMath programme is ideal if you want to pursue a career in Mathematics.

Many of our graduates go on to PhDs and to research in industry. Your first two years follow the same structure as the BSc course, and your third and fourth years consist entirely of optional modules. Throughout your course 75% comprises Mathematics and you are free to choose the remainder of options from within or outside the Institute. You must obtain consistently high marks in Mathematics to stay on the MMath programme.

How will I be taught?

Each module is usually taught in three one-hour lectures per week, and you typically study four or five modules per term. In your first year, you meet your supervisor (a graduate student or final year undergraduate) twice a week to discuss the course material and go over submitted work. In your second and third years, lecture modules are accompanied by weekly support classes. Your personal tutor provides a further layer of learning and pastoral support.

Our approach to teaching is forward-looking and often innovative. The first Analysis module is taught through structured group problem-solving. The Mathematics by Computer module is computer-based, introducing you to mathematical software that illustrates new concepts. The Experimental Mathematics module uses practical investigations into coupled pendula, soap films and nonlinear oscillators.

How will I be assessed?

Most modules are assessed by 15% coursework and 85% final examinations or by 100% exam, with almost all exams taken in the third term. Essays and projects, such as the final-year MMath project, are assessed by coursework and an oral presentation.

What opportunities are there for work experience or to study abroad?

We support student mobility through study abroad programmes and BSc students have the opportunity to apply for an intercalated year abroad at one of our partner universities. MMath students can spend their third year abroad in Europe and receive MMath with Study in Europe.

The Study Abroad Team based in the Office for Global Engagement offers support for these activities, and the Department’s dedicated Study Abroad Co-ordinator can provide more specific information and assistance. We would support any student wanting to spend an intercalated year in a mathematical role in industry.

Access Courses Access to HE Diploma (QAA- recognised) including appropriate subjects with distinction grades in level 3 units, and grade A* in A level Mathematics or equivalent. Typically, offers will also include a requirement in both a STEP paper and A level Further Mathematics.

Warwick International Foundation Programme (IFP) All students who successfully complete the Warwick IFP and apply to Warwick through UCAS will receive a guaranteed conditional offer for a related undergraduate programme (selected courses only). Further Information

Taking a gap year Applications for deferred entry are welcomed, but applicants are strongly advised to maintain and sharpen their mathematical competence during their year out.

Interviews We do not typically interview applicants.Offers are made based on your predicted and actual grades, along with your personal statement. Occasionally, some applicants may be interviewed, for example candidates returning to study or those with non-standard qualifications.

What modules could I study?

First term core modules may include Differential Equations; Analysis; Foundations and Abstract Algebra. Maths and Economics students also need to take Economics I and Maths and Philosophy students will take Decartes and Mills.

Optional modules may include Introduction to Geometry; Classical Mechanics and Relativity; Discrete Maths & its Applications; Introduction to Quantitative Economics (not Maths and Economics students); Issues in Philosophy and Statistical Laboratory.
