What will I learn?

This accredited course establishes a sound understanding of mechanical engineering principles and develop the expertise to design and create sustainable, cutting-edge technologies.
Our courses take a multidisciplinary approach to engineering challenges and are led jointly by experts in the School of Engineering and WMG (Warwick Manufacturing Group). There will be opportunities to learn from leading research groups, in areas such as precision mechanics, fluid dynamics and sustainable thermal energy technology, and to access our excellent resources, including a digital workshop where you can 3D-print your designs. You will develop highly sought-after skills in project management and communication, alongside the ability to research, design and develop mechanical engineering products and systems.
Your first and second years focus on core areas of engineering with options to specialise in mechanical engineering via laboratory and design work. Projects include reverse engineering a single-cylinder internal combustion engine using CAE software. In your third year you will take core modules in solid mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and mechanical design, and individual project work in areas from stochastic models of biosensing to designing a new solar collector.
Fourth-year MEng students can explore specialist areas of mechanical engineering through their optional module choices and add an elective in fluid dynamics, sustainability or business management to their degree title. Group projects simulate collaborative working in industry by tackling challenges such as using energy from the human body to power a heart pacemaker, creating a costeffective refrigeration system to store vaccines, or improving power transmission systems.
How will I learn?
Each week you will participate in lectures, seminars, tutorials and practical laboratory sessions. To help you make the transition from school to university, in your first year you will meet your personal tutor each week in a group of five or six students to address academic issues arising from lectures.
Engineers are always involved in interdisciplinary group work and this forms part of our courses from day one. A foundation in mathematics module can be taken in place of an optional module in your first year if you do not have either A level or Higher Level Mathematics.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is through examinations (around 60–70%) and coursework (around 30–40%). Coursework assessment can include laboratory reports, projects, essays and oral presentations.
What opportunities are there for work experience and study abroad?
You can gain industrial experience throughout your course in the UK and abroad via visits, project work and placements during vacations. Our most recent scheme has enabled students to work on a project in Uganda, repairing micro hydro power generators. Some students can also take a year-long placement in industry or in a research environment.
Finally, MEng students can exchange their third year of study at Warwick to study with one of our partner universities abroad. Our current partners include universities in Europe, Australia, the USA, China, Japan and South Korea.
Becoming a Chartered Engineer
This requires both academic qualification and responsible experience in your chosen industry. The preferred academic qualification is a four-year accredited Master of Engineering (MEng) degree. Alternatively you can complete a three-year accredited Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degree and complete ‘Additional Learning’ after graduation, perhaps in the form of an accredited MSc.
All our degrees (except Engineering Business Management and Engineering and Business Studies) are accredited as providing the academic component (in part or fully) needed for Chartered Engineer status.
A level AAA for MEng, to include A level Mathematics and Physics.
You must also achieve a pass in the science practical if your science A level includes a separate practical assessment.
A levels in applied subjects and mixed portfolios Candidates are considered on an individual basis. Grades will be similar to those for candidates taking academic A and AS qualifications.
International Baccalaureate 38 points for MEng, to include 6 in Higher Level Mathematics and Physics.
Other Qualifications Advanced Diplomas and Engineering Principal Learning qualifications will be considered alongside other qualifications and on a case by case basis. Access/BTEC Courses Access to HE Diploma (QAA-recognised) and BTEC Extended Diplomas in appropriate subjects considered, if offered with A level Mathematics at grade A for MEng or grade B for BEng/BSc. Distinctions are required in Access and BTEC qualifications.
Warwick International Foundation Programme (IFP) All students who successfully complete the Warwick IFP and apply to Warwick through UCAS will receive a guaranteed conditional offer for a related undergraduate programme (selected courses only). General Studies/Critical Thinking Offers normally exclude these subjects.
You must have studied Mathematics and Physics at Advanced or Higher level. You must also achieve a pass in the science practical if your science A level includes a separate practical assessment.
However, we recognise that Engineering draws on many skills and we are willing to consider highly motivated applicants with different qualifications provided there is good evidence of mathematical ability. We invite anybody in this situation to discuss their aspirations with us at the earliest opportunity.
We offer a Foundation in Mathematics module that can be taken in the first year in place of an optional module for those students not offering Mathematics at Advanced or Higher level study.

Interviews We do not typically interview applicants. Offers are made based on your predicted and actual grades, along with your personal statement. Occasionally, some applicants may be interviewed, for example candidates returning to study or those with non-standard qualifications.
What modules can I study?
For the first two years, all students follow the same programme. The course is designed to give you a broad overview of engineering, much favoured by industry. In year three you are able to specialise, or continue the General Engineering route. At this stage you can also chose between progressing on the an MEng or BEng route.
First year core modules may include Engineering Mathematics and Systems Modelling; Mechanics, Structures and Thermodynamics; Circuits, Devices and Power Systems; Design for Function; Introduction to Engineering Business Management and one optional module may be chosen from Biomedical Engineering; Multimedia Technology; Technology in International Development; The Aesthetics of Design and a Modern Foreign Language.
In your second year core modules may include Energy conversion and power systems; Engineering design; Engineering materials; Engineering mathematics and technical computing; Mechanics and thermofluids; Technical operations management and optional modules could include Computer engineering and programming; Forensic engineering; Introduction to Secondary school teaching; Modern foreign languages; Motor vehicle technology and Starting a business.
Third year core modules may include Dynamics of Vibrating Systems; Electromechanical Systems; Engines and Heat Pumps; Fluid Mechanics for Mechanical Engineers; Individual Project; Mechanical Design and Planar Structures and Mechanisms.
Your fourth year core module may comprise a Group Project and optional modules could include Advanced Fluid Dynamics; African Field Course; Computational Fluid Dynamics; Design for Sustainability; Dynamic Analysis of Mechanical Systems; Energy Conservation; Finite Element Methods; Heat Transfer; Mathematical and Computer Modelling; Optical Engineering; Precision Engineering and Microsystems; Quality Systems; Renewable Energy Systems; Simulation of Operations and Supply Chain Management.
