- We are consistently ranked in national league tables as one of the top Theatre departments in the UK and were noted as ‘excellent’ by The Sunday Times. We also regularly record very high satisfaction ratings in National Student Surveys for the quality of our teaching and enthusiastic staff (97% of students strongly agreed or agreed that they were satisfied with the overall quality of their course in the 2014 survey).
- Our academics’ expertise is wide-ranging and of international significance. This means that you will be taught by acknowledged experts, who are engaged with current issues and theoretical reflections in Theatre and Performance Studies. Specialist areas include: contemporary theatre and performance, history and historiography, national and intercultural theatres, and performance evolving from the city, public events and experiments with new technologies.
- We have outstanding connections to theatre industries and the University is home to Warwick Arts Centre, one of the largest arts complexes in the UK outside London. Departmental learning facilities include fully equipped practical spaces comprising two black-box studios, two adaptable rehearsal spaces with sprung floors and an edit suite with digital video-making facilities.

What will I learn?
We believe that theatre and performance occurs not only in theatre buildings, but also in cities, on streets, in rituals and daily life, and in spaces real, virtual and imagined. This course allows you to engage creatively and critically with contemporary social, political and aesthetic issues through the lens of Theatre and Performance Studies.
You will learn in an intimate and supportive environment, taught by academics at the forefront of internationally significant research. Teaching is delivered through both practical and seminar-based modules (e.g. Performance and Contemporary City, Food and Performance, African and South African Theatre, Intercultural Performance, Writing for Performance, Dramaturgy, Marketing, Theatre History and Historiography) and you can also pursue individual research projects.
You will also benefit from our outstanding resources and connections to the theatre industries and creative sector, with visits and guest workshops by renowned practitioners. You will develop valuable transferable research, analytical, organisational and communication skills alongside the ability to think and work creatively.
The first year consists of four modules – Contemporary Performance Practice, Introduction to Theatre and Performance Studies, From Text to Performance, and Performance Analysis – which provide you with core practical, critical and writing skills and subject knowledge. Your second and third years offer various practice and seminar-based modules, with freedom to choose options to match your interests. In your third year, you will either complete a 10,000-word research dissertation or a creative practice project. Warwick Arts Centre, located on campus, provides exciting opportunities for you to develop your projects further.
How will I learn?
Teaching is delivered via lectures, small-group seminars and studio-based explorations, supplemented by theatre visits, field trips, guest lectures and workshops. Contact hours vary from student to student as we encourage you to follow modules that best suit your interests and abilities. As a guide, our seminar-based modules normally involve 2 contact hours per week and modules with a strong practical component are normally 4 hours per week.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through practical projects, creative logbooks, essays, individual and group presentations, and exams. You will receive regular feedback on your work as an integral part of teaching and learning. Your final degree classification is based on the results of your second and third years, which carry equal weighting.
What opportunities are there to study abroad?
We support student mobility through study abroad programmes and all students have the opportunity to apply for a year abroad at one of our partner universities. The Study Abroad Team based in the Office for Global Engagement offers support for these activities, and the Department’s dedicated Study Abroad Co-ordinator can provide more
specific information and assistance.

Interviews All candidates being considered for an offer will need to attend an interview. Departmental Interview Days are normally held on Wednesdays from late November to March. Separate arrangements can be
made for International Students who are unable to attend an interview.

What modules could I study?
First year core modules may include Contemporary Performance Practices; Introduction to Theatre & Performance Studies; From Text to Performance; Performance Analysis.
Examples of second year core modules may include Writing for Performance; Theatre in the Community; Audio-Visual Avant-Gardes; Marketing; Medieval & Elizabethan Playing Places & Performances; Religion, Secularity, and Affect in the Modern World; Performing Online; 20th Century Irish Theatre; South African Theatre; Nineteenth Century Melodrama.
Examples of third year modules may include Independent Research Option (core for single honours); Adaptation for Performance; Intercultural Theatre Practices; Food and Performance; Performing Gender and Sexuality Design for Shakespeare; Interpreting the Theatrical Past: Approaches to Theatre Historiography.
You may elect to take one or more IATL interdisciplinary modules as options throughout the degree subject to the approval of the Chair of the Department.
