Our Handbells
|
Our society owns a total of 16 handbells. The three lightest bells have been ordered brand new from Taylors of Loughborough, whilst the rest we bought second hand, and had tuned for us. Originally the society did not have any handbells, but many members expressed a desire for a set, and in 2002 the second-hand bells were bought. Handbell-ringing became increasingly popular in the society. In 2003 we bought an extra bell, followed by two more in 2004, which brought the number of handbells up to 16. The handbells are now rung every Monday and Friday. Because of the large number of learners we get every year we usually do not get beyond Plain Bob before Christmas, but in the second half of the year we enjoy ringing more complicated methods, and we have also rung some quarter peals. Tunes on handbells have also become very popular. This is probably because we are able to get the handbells to make some pleasant sounds, and sometimes people who are not ringing are even able to recognise the tune! Occasionally we get invited to ring at different events, such as a wedding or a Christmas service. This helps to promote the society. |
