Campus Development Update

The University’s outline planning application for the future development of the campus has been granted approval in principle by the two local authorities: Coventry City Council and Warwick District Council.

Coventry City Council planning committee unanimously voted in favour of the plans at a meeting on Thursday 17th January. A number of members of the Committee spoke in positive terms about the value of the development to Coventry.

Warwick District Council planning committee considered the application at a meeting on Tuesday 19th February where 8 members voted in favour of the plans and only 2 against.

The application was referred to Government Office for the West Midlands following agreement of the heads of terms for the planning obligations (relating to the travel plan and transport improvements). GOWM decided not to intervene in the decision on 17 September and it is now with Coventry City Council to report the application back to Committee with the draft Section 106 Agreement.

The University is hopeful that planning permission will be issued around Christmas

The University’s Masterplan envisages 171,000 sq m of additional development on the existing campus over the next ten years, at an estimated cost of £400 million. There is expected to be an extra 4000 staff and students at the University which already employs over 5000 staff. This is a 40% increase in the overall campus footprint.
