UNISON University of Warwick

Welcome to the website for the University of Warwick Unison Branch

UNISON is Britain and Europe's biggest public sector union with more than 1.3 million members. Our members are people working in the public services, for private contractors providing public services and in the essential utilities. They include frontline staff and managers working full or part time in local authorities, the NHS, the police service, Universites, colleges and schools, the electricity, gas and water industries, transport and the voluntary sector. Last year UNISON recruited 137,000 new members - 375 per day.

We are the largest UK trade union for support staff in higher education. Our 50,000 members include registrars, librarians, personnel, technicians, administrators, clerks, secretaries, cleaners, craftworkers, catering staff, porters and people working in IT, finance and estates management. UNISON negotiates for better pay, terms and conditions for all members. This can be at national level (as in the case of the NHS) or at company level (as in the utilities).

At Warwick, UNISON currently represents 270 members spanning 42 academic and support departments and also has an active 'Retired Members' group.

People like you

The Warwick branch brings you together with other employees who face common issues in the workplace and will endeavour to enable you to get support from the union, work with your colleagues and make your views felt in UNISON.

You may already know your Unison workplace steward or health and safety representatives who are the core of the branch. If not, then you can see a list of these on the Stewards page. Local stewards are there to represent you at work and help find the answers to your problems. They are volunteers and play a vital role in recruiting new members and organising the branch. If you have a problem, talk to your local steward. If they can't handle the problem on their own, they can talk to other branch officers or full - time union experts on your behalf.

Anyone can face problems at work sometimes but if you are a member of UNISON, you don't have to face them alone. We can provide advice or representation on things like pay, rotas, leave and sickness procedures. We are also there to help you make sure your workplace is healthy and safe, support you in case of disciplinary action, dismissals or redundancy.

Branch life

The branch is run by a committee which consists of volunteers elected to take on different roles. We hold regular meetings, including an annual general meeting (where people can be elected to the branch committee or volunteer to get more involved as stewards and workplace contacts).
