Webmoco: Computer Science Placements

Webmoco is a boutique software and design agency based in Leamington Spa, providing their clients with technical and creative solutions. They have been working with the University of Warwick's Employer Connect service over the past two years to provide placements and employment for its computer science students and graduates. Webmoco is also engaging with Warwick’s MBA students for research and working with WMG to understand some key market potential.

How have Webmoco worked with the University?

Webmoco have recruited a variety of placements and positions through the University’s Employer Connect services.

In 2014, two 2nd year placements joined the team for the summer, together with a recent graduate on a 3-month work experience placement. The candidates enjoyed and were challenged to use a variety of disciplines, including Javascript, C#, MVC, Android and iOS tools as well as a wide range of web development technologies.

Warwick graduates have also been able to secure permanent roles with the company as a direct result of their involvement and hands on recruitment approach. A 2014 Computer Science graduate was offered a permanent position at Webmoco and a recent work experience placement is ready to convert to a full time role.

In 2015, Webmoco will be looking to Warwick once again to recruit both summer and annual placements for undergraduates and graduates. They’re also looking to offer opportunities for graduates to experience fixed term work placements, with a view to convert them to permanent members of their highly skilled development team.

How does it benefit Webmoco?

Webmoco is keen to find the brightest talent to join their team and the University of Warwick is a great place to start. They are firm believers in training and nurturing the skills the business needs, right from the very start. Neither do they underestimate the enthusiasm and creativity the students bring to the role, in a particularly fast moving industry. What’s more, the rest of the team benefit from mentoring the new recruits and passing on their expertise, helping everyone to raise their game.

How does it benefit the students?

The students and graduates arrive from Warwick with a solid grounding in programming. A few months with Webmoco allows them to build on this foundation with practical experience developing production quality applications for desktop, tablet and mobile devices. This exposes them to range of different technologies which they may not be experienced in. Besides coding they gain valuable experience of working in a test driven development environment where Agile software processes are used by the team. Automated deployment and testing at all levels of a system helps focus developers’ minds on quality. This is very much the ethos at Webmoco and students learn a lot from being part of this process.

Testimonial from Webmoco

“We have always prioritized finding exciting new talent. Around 40 to 50% of our staff joined us at an entry level position and many have progressed within the company. It’s fantastic that we have such a wealth to draw on at the University.”

Testimonial from student

“Being at Webmoco has really helped me develop. Working within a team and with a mentor has meant that I found adopting new technologies relatively easy. It’s also opened my eyes to the Agile development process and how I fit within a busy team”
