2008-2009

This fortnightly series of seminars is intended to provide a forum for discussion of literary research projects underway both within and outside of the department. This year’s programme covers a wide chronological and thematic range involving both internal and external speakers.

Each sessions starts at 1pm and consists of a 40 minute presentation followed by 20 minutes for discussion.

The research seminars are open to all staff and graduate students in the department.

Light refreshments are available for those attending.



Wednesday 22 april 2009 (Week 1) 1pm in H502

Jonathan Lamb, Andrew Mellon Professor of the Humanities at Vanderbilt University, and author of, among other books, Exploration and Exchange: British and American Narratives of the Pacific 1680 - 1900 will talk about this current research and that of his colleagues at Vanderbilt.

“Linguistic Immigration: Towards a Translational Poetics.” Marjorie Perloff (Stanford)

Wednesday 3 june 2009 (week 7) 1pm in H545

"Obama in China: The Audacity of Translation" - Professor Luo Xianmin, Director of the Centre of Translation and Interdisciplinary Studies, Tsinghua University, Beijing

Professor Luo is the author of numerous books and articles on translation studies and comparative literature, as well as acting as a translator himself (of Obama, Twain and others). He has held visiting fellowships at UCLA and Yale and (currently) as the LSE.
