Outbound Students: Applications

Requirements

In order to be able to apply for a study abroad placement at one of our partner institutions students must meet two requirements:

  1. A good 2.1 Average: Students must end their first year with an overall 2.1 average, and demonstrate that they are maintaining that average into their second year.
  2. Completed Application form: For their application students are required to write a personal statement outlining why the beleive they would benefit from a year abroad, and how the year abroad fits in to their wider accademic plans. Students must then take their printed applications to their personal tutor.
  3. Nomination from personal tutor: Students require a reference from a member of staff, usually a personal tutor.

Please note we cannot guarantee that every student who applies for study abroad will receive a placement. The number of available places is fixed and subject to change on an annual basis.

The Application Process

Application for study abroad is a two-stage process – an internal nomination stage and an external application stage.

Stage 1: Internal Nominations

The process begins in October of your second year with the Study Abroad Presentation; where a member of staff will outline the application process in more detail, as well as explaining some of the specifics regarding issues such as finances, course options, and academic requirements.
By the End of November, students will have submitted their departmental application for study abroad and secured a reference from their personal tutor. You will also need to write a short personal statement. Application forms are available to download here

The department will nominate a number of successful applicants for the study abroad scheme. A nomination by the department does not guarantee a study abroad place – the final decision lies with the host university.
The department must inform the Office for Global Engagement’s Study Abroad team of our nominations by January.

Stage 2: External Applications

The Office for Global Engagement forwards our nominations to the relevant partner institutions. From the end of February onwards, successful nominees should receive further details from their host university regarding the application process for that institution.
The procedures from this point on will differ according to host university.
