Dave, father of two (born 1978 and 1980), hometown Leamington Spa

I wouldn't have missed these occasions for anything. Men of my generation are so much luckier than earlier ones in that society permits and even expects us to be closer to our children. I should say that I went on to be primary carer for them for 5 years (roughly 6-11) and that I can trace the strength of our loving relationship right back to the birth experiences. This also helped me get closer to own father (at whose death I was present - a similarly emotionally powerful and fulfilling experience akin to childbirth).

Now my children are adults, I feel these positive experiences have brought me a closer bond with my grandchildren than I had with my grandparents [and, to a lesser extent, than my parents had with my children].
