Prisoners, Medical Care and Entitlement to Health in England and Ireland, 1850-2000

This new, Wellcome Trust funded, project straddles the period from the start of the modern prison system in the mid-nineteenth century up to the current day. It will undertake research into topics that resonate with current concerns in the prison service, including the very high incidence of mental health problems amongst prisoners, the health of women in prison, including maternity services, and responses to addiction and HIV/AIDS.

In 2018, Britain’s pioneering National Health Service will be seventy years old. Astonishingly, the cultural history of this key institution of post-war British life remains largely undeveloped. A new Wellcome Trust Joint Investigator Award will enable Principal Investigators Roberta Bivins and Mathew Thomson and their team of postdoctoral researchers to produce the first major history of this subject.

a trans-disciplinary collaboration dedicated to improving and promoting high quality research on ethnicity and health.
Founded by a group of researchers based at the University of Warwick (convened by Dr Roberta Bivins); Cardiff University and De Montfort University, with experience in studying the impact of ethnicity on health care and health outcomes from a range of disciplinary perspectives. Through our network and workshops, we are working to develop new models for research on key ethnicity-linked issues.
