First Year Workshops

These workshops are highly recommended and are open to all students taking HI153 Making of the Modern World. There are a series of workshops over the course of the academic year which look at writing your first degree level essay; aiming for a first! (improving academic writing, references and bibliographies, using primary and secondary sources, capitalising on feedback, using historiography and theory and writing longer essays). Online Presentation

This workshop is optional for students taking HI153 Making of the Modern World. This one-hour online presentation workshop will give you helpful tuition and advice on creating and delivering the best presentations. It will also help you prepare for your group presentation for the Making of the Modern World.

If you want more support then there are face-to-face workshops organised by the Learning Grid (where you can practice giving your group presentation and get tips on improvement) and by Student Skills.

Digital Storytelling

This workshop is optional for students taking HI153 Making of the Modern World. The session will cover different approaches to making videos/podcasts as well as the necessary practical skills.

Booking for this workshop will be available in Term 2.

Career Planning

This workshop is optional for students taking HI153 Making of the Modern World. However, students are strongly advised to attend. The sessions aim to touch on many factors; including CVs, covering letters, researching employers and help available to students from Student Careers and Skills. The overall aim is to encourage the students to be proactive from year 1 in gaining experiences to build their CV’s, regardless of whether they have any definite job ideas.

Please bring a printed copy of your current CV to the workshops, it doesn’t matter how ‘finished/polished’ they are.
