Arabic Beginners (LL171)

Level

You are a complete beginner, knowing virtually nothing of the language.

Main Objectives
  • To develop students’ learning skills in the basic structure of Arabic
  • To enable the learner to take his or her first steps in understanding and using non-verbal sentences
  • To develop the ability to recognise and formulate the letters and move towards the first steps of reading and writing simple words, phrases, sentences and simple paragraphs
Teaching and Learning

Teaching will be delivered fully online on MS Teams.

There will be one weekly two-hour online session for 19 weeks.

Course Description

Based on a step-by-step approach, the course is divided into learning blocks each of which focuses on practical, useful and manageable language. You will develop cultural awareness of the Arabic speaking world. You will have access to online resources for more independent learning. Homework tasks will be set each week to consolidate what you have learnt in class.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • understand a range of familiar spoken phrases, simple questions and short dialogues
  • understand the main points in a short written text; understand simple forms for basic personal details
  • understand words and short phrases on common public notices
  • answer simple questions and give basic information; ask and answer simple questions about place of work or study, job, family or interests
  • make basic introductions and use basic greetings and courtesy phrases
  • write short texts (emails, postcards...)
  • fill in a simple form with personal details; write short sentences on familiar topics
