French Higher Intermediate (L46) - Updated for 2017/18

Summary

Level:

This level is applied to a limited number of Language Centre courses as a bridge between Intermediate and Advanced 1. You will probably have completed over 200 hours of tuition or had some learning of the language in post-compulsory schooling at least AS level grades A & B or A2 level up to grade C or equivalent. While being able to express yourself reasonably well and quite accurately, some of the language spoken at native speaker speed still escapes you and feel the need for more intensive practice, both in speaking and in writing.

Main Objectives:

The course will focus on improving your fluency in a wide range of areas such as current affairs, popular culture, customs, social issues, technology. Emphasis will be placed on oral presentations, debates and exchange of views and ideas. Further development of grammatical structures and vocabulary will be integrated into the course activities.

Course Description

This course will allow you to strengthen your reading and writing skills and will also reinforce your communicative skills acquired during previous study of the French language.

Writing and speaking activities will be supported by authentic written and spoken material provided by the tutor. You will discuss and analyse aspects of French culture and society.

You will study more advanced language structures, grammar and expressions.

Consolidation of major elements, such as:

  • uses of tenses in the indicative;
  • direct and indirect object pronouns;
  • pronominal verbs;
  • demonstrative and emphatic pronouns;
  • relative pronouns;
  • prepositional phrases;
  • verbs + infinitive;
  • adverbs;
  • comparison of adverbs;
  • comparatives and superlatives (adjectives);
  • the conditional and conditional perfect;
  • direct and indirect speech;
  • the subjunctive.
