Summary

Level:

You have very good vocabulary and a good understanding of grammatical rules and how to apply them. You may have done one year of post A2 level study or 6 years attendance at evening classes. Whilst being able to communicate and interact with ease in most common social or work situations, you can grasp most of the language spoken at native speaker speed. You feel confident understanding written documents and you are developing fluency in your writing. You have lived in a French speaking country and/or visit it regularly.

Main Objectives:

The course gives you the opportunity to develop your fluency further together with your awareness of what is happening in the country.

Teaching:

1 x 2 hour class per week plus some independent learning.

 

Course Text

No textbook is required. Selected texts will be provided.

Course Description

The course is taught in a small group (a maximum of 12 students), and your participation will be essential to the impetus of the lesson. You will have many opportunities to express your opinions and activities will be tailored to your linguistic needs. Due to the size of the group, you will be given immediate feedback which you will be able to discuss with your tutor and your fellow students.

You will be encouraged to take part in discussions and debates, to discover texts, video and audio materials and films. You will read selected extracts from contemporary and non-contemporary writers and follow political and social developments in France.

Learning in class will be reinforced by weekly homework which will cover a range of activities.

Syllabus

This course will cover the following: 

Topics

  • French political system and main political parties;
  • French social issues;
  • French culture and literature;
  • current affairs.

Grammar

  • revision of all tenses with emphasis on the subjunctive;
  • the passive;
  • relative pronouns;
  • direct and indirect pronouns;
  • past participle agreement;
  • gerund.

Skills

  • listening, speaking, reading and writing.
