My PhD, provisionally titled, 'Belonging between: food, ethnography, and Transnationalizing Modern Languages', is supervised by Dr. Jennifer Burns and is part of the AHRC-funded project 'Transnationalizing Modern Languages: Mobility, Identity and Translation in Modern Italian Cultures' (within the 'Translating Cultures' theme). My research considers the experience and expression of historic and contemporary Italian migration to London. On one hand, I'm interested in examining the construction of ideas of Italy in and via different sites related to food - public spaces such as bars, cafés, but also celebrity figures, virtual media, recipe books, and language itself. On the other, I want to balance this with an exploration of how these ideas matter in everyday life, for people that have moved from Italy to England or who identify as Italian in some way. I am concerned with questions like: 'What do we mean when we say something is "authentically Italian", why does it matter, and who for?', 'How does speaking - or not speaking - a language impact on individual sense of identity?', and 'What values can we interpret in the current desirability of Italian culinary culture within England?'. Via these questions, I address issues of class, language learning, memory and identity as part of the theme of belonging. A broader aim of my project is to explore the value of material culture and ethnographic approaches in Modern Languages research and teaching.
An important and exciting part of the project are the 'Writing Across Languages and Cultures' workshops coordinated by Dr. Naomi Wells and led by writer Shirin Ramzanali Fazel. Details of the workshops and the themes investigated through them can be found on the 'Writing Across' blog.
In a separate project, I am exploring the use of translation in language teaching. I am especially interested in the ways that translation can be used in child and adult learning to develop student confidence and a critical cultural awareness. Together with Gioia Panzarella, I coordinate the Language Learning element of the research project 'Collaborative Translation: A Model for Inclusivity', funded by the Monash-Warwick Alliance. The project analyses the use of a specific model of translation in teaching through a series of undergraduate English and Italian language-learning workshops and events between October 2016 - July 2017.
