This MA in French Studies is an MA by research: it is designed for students who wish to proceed directly to research without first taking a taught MA programme. It can be taken as a preparation for PhD work. It may suit students who already have acquired considerable research skills in their curriculum, and/or who have a clear idea of their own particular area of interest for further research. It may also be attractive to students who wish to work with particular members of the School on their areas of expertise.

For the MA by research you will write a 40,000-word dissertation with guidance from one or two specialist supervisors. Students are advised to identify the member of staff whom they hope to work with.

If you wish to apply for an MA by research, you should state your reasons for opting for this course rather than for the taught MA programme. Your project proposal (research proposal) will form an important aspect of your application. It is advisable to discuss your proposed topic of research with your prospective supervisor and the Director of Graduate Studies before proceeding to an application.

Teaching and Learning Methods

• If you are reading for the MA in French Studies by Research, you are required to identify a supervisor, with the help of the Director of Graduate Studies (normally this is done at the admissions stage), and to work towards the completion of a 40,000 word dissertation, following closely the advice of your supervisor, who is also your personal tutor.
• The role of the research supervisor is similar to that of an MPhil/PhD supervisor
• Depending on your prior experience and skills you may also be advised to audit taught modules that may be relevant to your research.
• The deadline for submission of dissertations for the MA in French Studies (by research) is 10 September. You must supply two copies. You may be required to attend a viva.
