Introduction to Applied Linguistics - Approaches and Methods

Module Code: LN302
Module Name: Introduction to Applied Linguistics: Approaches and Methods
Module Credits: 15

This module aims to introduce students to core ideas, concepts and issues in Applied Linguistics, with particular attention to the evolution of approaches to and methods in Foreign Language Teaching & Foreign Language Learning (FLT/FLL) in the twentieth century. We will cover topics such as the relationship between Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, the evolution from traditional methodologies in FLT (also known as the grammar-translation method) to structural, notional-functional, communicative and so-called ‘post-communicative’ approaches. The module does not require any previous knowledge of linguistics. Experience in learning a foreign language, however, is essential, as students will be able to draw on this in order to build a critical understanding of key problems and concepts in teaching and learning a foreign language. Lectures are followed by separate seminars, which are mostly student-led and are designed to allow students to gain an understanding of the relationship between linguistics, applied linguistics and, more specifically, FLT, as well as of their connections to social and historical factors which have influenced their recent evolution.

Assessment Method:

Either one assessed essay of 2,500 words (50%) and one 1-hour exam (50%) in June, or one assessed essay of 5,000 words (100%).
